False National Pride

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

Being born and raised in Malaysia, it saddens and angers me when millions of taxpayers money could be otherwise put to better use rather than pulling on stunts such as this which has no foreseeable economic benefits.

According to the star:

Astro Cannot

According to NASA:

Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor will launch with Expedition 16 and land with Expedition 15.

As per wikipedia, NASA Public Affairs has used the term Spaceflight Participant to designate space tourists. Tito, Shuttleworth, Olsen, Ansari, and Simonyi were designated as such during their respective space flights.

With the exception of Dr Sheikh, the other crew member has extensive qualifications and experience and are knowledgeable enough to carry on experiments. Then comes the question of what Dr Sheikh would be doing up there in space? He has neither academic qualifications nor experience to carry out any experiments. Could he be the tea-boy in space?

In addition, according to The Press Association, it appears that Malaysia’s Science Minister is keen to send a second “Astronaut” to space.

Jamaluddin said Malaysia is hoping to send a second astronaut into space, depending on public support for the first mission. He said the second mission would cost 30 million US dollars (£15 million), but the long-term benefits would be worth it. – The Press Association

As far as I’m concern, I don’t see any benefit Malaysians are able to derive from this. $30m USD per “astronaut” is equals to about RM 114 million. That would mean about RM230 million of tax payers money going to waste. That money could have been better spent on improving the public transport system, the police and judiciary force, the health-care and education system for example.

One of Malaysia’s pride, the Petronas Twin Towers are certainly one of the tallest and grandest building in the world. However, when it was being built, are there any office shortage in Kuala Lumpur? The bill was foot by oil from the ground, and the construction was contracted out to a South Korean companies. Is there anything that Malaysia can claim as its achievements? Heck, even the shopping centre in not fully run by Malaysians (KLCC (Holding) Bhd owns 60 per cent of Suria KLCC, while 30 per cent is held by Rotterdam-based Rodamco which is part of the RM35 billion public-listed Robeco. The remaining 10 per cent is held by Westfield which owns/manages over 50 shopping centres in Australia and the United States). Malaysia Boleh? The space project aren’t even theirs.

Back in July 2006, the Malaysian Government announced that it would spend RM490 million on a sports complex near the London Olympics site so that Malaysian athletes can train there and “get used to cold weather”. But the summer Olympics are held in the summer. =.=”’ The huge cost incurred for building Sepang F1 Circuit and hosting a race that barely anyone watches is another testimony to wasteful spending. Heck they couldn’t even maintain it properly. Dirty grandstand seats or overflowing toilets where the flush system doesn’t work, its no wonder that Bernie Ecclestone aka F1 Supremo is contemplating removing Malaysia from the Grand Prix map. Building a new capital city and an international airport that is running under-capacity are also a few projects whose bill are all footed by Petronas.

As it stands, Malaysia is in for some troubling times when the oil runs out. According to Malaysian Institute of Economic Research Executive Director Mohamed Ariff, Malaysia will become a net crude importer by 2009 or 2010. According to a forecast by state-owned Petronas, Malaysia has total crude reserves of more than five billion barrels, equivalent to 20 years of the nation’s oil consumption. However, Ariff said independent research bodies have found the country now has only 4.2 billion barrels of oil reserves on hand, equivalent to 14 years of Malaysia’s oil consumption. (source: Energy Current)

Its sad to see money gone to waste just to inflate Malaysian’s false sense of pride, to fuel Malaysia’s grossly inflated sense of its place in the world. It is sad to see how much money is being wasted. Stunts like sending Malaysians to space such as this is simply a waste of scarce resources which could otherwise be invested in other useful projects.

Arnott’s vs Homebrand

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

So the other day I was at Safeway® doing some grocery shopping. I stopped by at my favourite section to satisfy my cravings for cookies! Being recently broke and feeling cheap, I was hunting for the cheapest alternative available to me. Normally, I would pick Arnott’s Premier chocolate chip cookies. This time however, i decided to run an experiment.

Based on my accounting knowledge, it was known that generic brand items are nearly as good as most branded items as they are either manufactured by less prominent companies, or manufactured on the same production line as a ‘named’ brand. To put this theory to the test, I bought a 500g Home Brand chocolate chop cookies. The experiment will run as follows.

Arnott’s vs Homebrand

Experiment 1:
Eat 5 Arnott’s Premier chocolate chip cookies and immediately followed by 5 Home Brand chocolate chop cookies.

Experiment 2:
Eat 5 Arnott’s Premier chocolate chip cookies by itself.

Experiment 3:
Eat 5 Home Brand chocolate chop cookies by itself.

note: Experiment 2 and 3 not to be run within 5 hours of each other to completely remove taste.

The results:
Experiment 1:
Arnott’s Premier chocolate chip cookies is clearly superior. Home Brand chocolate chop cookies is completely tasteless when compared to Arnott’s.

Experiment 2:
Arnott’s Premier chocolate chip cookies is as addictive as it always has been.

Experiment 3:
Surprisingly, Home Brand chocolate chop cookies is as addictive as Arnott’s Premier chocolate chip cookies! As of the time of writing this blog, the author has finished 250g of Home Brand cookies.

Conclusion:
While it is clear that Arnott’s is superior to Home Brand in this product, both products are tasty in their own right. The author concludes that while Home Brand pales in comparison to Arnott’s, it DOES NOT SUCK!

The Phantom of the Opera

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

Phantom JasonAndrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera” is one of the world’s best loved and longest running musical. The Phantom Of The Opera” opened to enormous success in October 1986 and has been running to capacity ever since till today. The one I attended was no different.

The story revolves around a beautiful opera singer and a young composer with a deformed face, adapted from the novel by Gaston Leroux. In the theatre version by Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber, the Phantom was born deformed and imprisoned in a mask as a child by his mother. He toured in side-shows and becomes a court jester to the Sultan of Persia. Through genius, he ends up designing palaces for the Shahs and is one of the architects ot the Paris Opera House.

Having watched the 2004 Movie, I can say that nothing beats the live experience. The famous overture struck up with a huge flash and the ‘refitted’ chandelier being ‘lifted’ and is starting it’s now trusted journey over the audience whilst the stage was being lighted up and burst into life with the performance of Hannibal at the beginning transform the legend of the phantom alive. Simply a fantastic way of starting the musical.

What amazes me most is the fluid and seamless flow between scenes, from stage front to back-stage, from Christine Daaé’s dressing room to the underground lake. Anna Marina’s performance as Chritine was excellent. I was amazed at the range of her vocals.

One of my favourite character, Madame Giry is being played by Jackie Rees. Dressed in all black, stern and mysterious; and I simply love it when she bangs her stick on the ground. Finally by other favourite character which is none other than the Phantom was played by Anthony Warlow. The lead role is always not easy to take on but Anthony delivered a spectacular performance. From his first appearance in the mirror to the mask on the chair, his performance in simply breathtaking. You can really feel his sadness in Music of the Night, yet another one of my favourite piece of music in the musical.

The music for this performance is very well written. I loved almost every music. Most notable were Think of Me, Angel of Music, The Phantom of the Opera, The Music of the Night, All I Asked of You, Masquerade and The Point of No Return. Of course, who could’ve forgotten the famous Overture which fully captures the character of the Phantom.

It is no wonder that The Phantom of the Opera is one of the longest running musical in history. Definitely a must watch. I for one would definitely wouldn’t mind watching it again.

Exam
http://metropolitician.blogs.com/scribblings_of_the_metrop/_scribblings_of_the_metrop_exam_scram.jpg Been really busy these past two weeks and didn’t have time to update the blog. First of, had been busy preparing for the mid semester tests. Frankly i prefer assignment based exams to those. I feel that exams are not a very accurate way to assess a person’s abilities. Panic and nervousness will cause you to get mind blocks and there goes your future.

In practical working life, even though there are deadlines, the time limit given are very reasonable and you can ponder it over sleep/shower/toilet/lunch/dinner/etc. But then again, I guess that’s the most cost effective way to asses bajeelion people on an individual basis.

Assignments
Right in the middle of the exams, I had a 20% Law Assignment due. I was utterly frustrated by that piece of assignment. There are so many ways you can interpret the meagre information available in the case study that it can really go anyway. Then there is the boring but essential scouring of the tax legislation for relevant sections to support your arguments.

There is just so damn much information in that darn book to demoralize you. But no matter how you slice it, I still prefer assignments over exams. Its more meaningful. It cracks your head more and you can analyse it more thoroughly. Some people are just gifted at analysing and coming up with answers and the others just need time. I’m slow. Pfft.

Last Minute Shopping
When everyone has been busy shopping for the formal wear for the upcoming I-Ball Nautica 2007 Ball, all I needed was a pair of black pants. I conveniently brought the wrong colour back and it does not match my blazer. Sad. At that time, I thought to myself, how hard is it to get a pants. Just walk in, pick the pants, get the right size and voila, I’m done. How wrong was I.

The ball was on a Friday. I did my shopping on a Thursday. Got up late and rushed down to the city around 12ish. I needed to get my shopping done before 12.30pm as i was to meet my two ye olde Year 12 buddies. By the time I got to David Jones, it was already 12.10pm. Twenty minutes to browse through the vast selection of formal/work pants that day have.

http://coquette.blogs.com/coquette/shopping.jpg

After frantically selecting and trying on some, I managed to find one that I really liked. One hundred percent pure wool. However, to my horror, I totally forgotten that all pants are long in length to allow for alterations and people have different heights. Time was not on my side. I quickly swiped my card (sorry dad and thanks =p) and rushed to meet my friends.

We met, chatted a bit and decided to grab the tickets for the movie “No Reservations” first. I took the chance to pop into the tailor to get my pants altered whilst they walked to the cinema. Because I wanted a same day, they charged me extra. Damn highway robbery. Normally, i would show them two fingers, but I was desperate.

Year 12 Trio
My two friends that I was talking about were my bestest best friends in Year 12. We sat separate from the rest of the class and arrange three tables side by side. We made noise, laughed and joked like Mr. Flavell wasn’t even there. Good times good times. We had lunch at my latest favourite Japanese restaurant called, Ajisen Ramen.

http://photos-d.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v112/88/122/682893950/n682893950_167367_5540.jpg

Everytime i go there, I’m tempted to order everything on the menu. They all look so enticing and delicious. It was catchup time for us. After an hour or so we headed to Starbucks for another catchup session then we hit the movies. No reservation. Typical romance movie. Nothing special but very enjoyable.

I-Ball

http://photos-a.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sctm/v124/123/5/633272873/n633272873_172848_2933.jpg

I-Ball Nautica 2007. I’d rather call i, Vanity Fair. That’s right, it was an excuse to dress up and take pictures. I’m not complaining. I was just happy cam-whoring and intruding on other people’s photo session ^_^ Nothing special about the ball. Not as special as my Year 12 Formal but an entertaining one nevertheless.

Highlights of the ball were – Daryl got alcoholised by us till he can’t walk straight, a couple of two guys won the ‘best couple’ award (i wonder which guy got the Heart of the Ocean…..), Too Phat performance? Pretty much that’s it. Hit Lavish for the afterparty and home by 2am. Sucks. Originally planned to come home bout 5-ish. Oh wells.

Sick
I actually fell sick on Wednesday. Hayfever, blocknose etc. Slept alot that’s why I was late on Thursday. Sleep recharged my batteries abit for a whole day’s worth of outing. Came back feeling terrible and went to sleep bout thirteen hours or so before meeting Chris for lunch in the city. Hung out at his place abit then went home and took another power nap as I-ball was later in the evening.

The obscene amount of sleep kept me going all night. Alcohol helped (strangely enough) and another Tequila shot at Lavish further boosted me. But alas, I finally succumbed to my sickness and dropped dead in bed at around four-ish (i think) and slept through till twelve the next arvo. Then, slept more.

Feeling better now as of Tuesday. Still sneezing and have terrible block nose, but no more lethargicness. Which is kinda good.

Foiled Plan
For the whole of Saturday and Sunday, being sick during holidays gives you every right to hardcore game without feeling any guilty conscience whatsoever in every waking moment. Finally, after getting my プレイステーション3 about a month ago, I have the chance to give her all my loving attention. Played a good chunk of Ninja Gaiden Sigma over the weekends. Only three more chapters until I complete the story mode and unlock fifty five mission for pure killing mayhem. Woke up on Monday morning and planned to get intimate with my プレイステーション3 and complete Ninja Gaiden Sigma.

http://playstation3uk.net/wp-content/uploads/2007/06/playstation3korealaunch.jpg

Then Eric-san messaged me about our audit assignment. Then Debbie-chan joined the chatroom and decided to meet on Tuesday to discuss our points for question one.

Holiday + Assignment + Sick + No intimate session with プレイステーション3 = Mood Utterly and Completely DESTROYED

There goes my day.

Things got worst around 2am when me and Eric found out we went about the wrong way on the assignment. Wheee. Clicked new document and labled DRAFT 2. When to the kitchen. Made a cup of hot coffee and another cup of honey, came back, stared at the screen and a long string of curses flowed like water and started redoing the assignment.

Worst day ever.

Lighbulb Moment
Met Chris and his girlfriend aka my cousin for lunch at Corretto on Tuesday before the assignment meeting. I still can’t believe hes dating my cousin. Never in my life would I ever thought that would happen. Nevermind. Hes my goodfriend. Shes my cousin. What they want to do is none of my concern. They have my blessings.

Three quarter of the time at lunch, I was looking the other direction. Lightbulb for the win.

Lightbulb moment
Not really a lighbulb but…you get the point

No hard feelings Chris =p

Game completion
Ah yes, holiday. Holiday is the time where I get to complete my list of games I’ve collected over the semester. The ever growing pile of uncompleted games makes me guilty. And here it is, my top priority to complete games.

[NDS] Lunar Knights
[PS3] Ninja Gaiden Sigma
[PSP] Monster Hunter Freedom 2 (Complete 5 star quests)
[PC ] Bioshock
[PSP] Riviera: The Promised Land
[PSP] Jeanne D’Arc
[PS3] Gundam: Target in Sight
[PS2] Final Fantasy XII
[PS2] Dirge of Cerberus
[PS2] God of War
[PS3] Resistance: Fall of Man
[NDS] Luminous Arc
[NDS] Hotel Dusk: Room 215
[NDS] Heroes of Mana

Thats right. I’ve so far ONLY completed one game. Lots of work to do =p

Little Acorns

Monday, September 17th, 2007

When problems overwhelm us and sadness smothers us where do we find the will and the courage to continue? Well the answer may come in the caring voice of a friend, a chance encounter with a book, or from a personal faith. For Janet help came from her faith, but it also from a squirrel.

Shortly after her divorce, Janet lost her father, then she lost her job. She had mounting money problems. But Janet not only survived she worked her way out of despondency and now she says, life is good again. How could this happen? She told me that late one day when she was at her lowest she watched a squirrel storing up nuts for the winter, one at a time he would take them to the nest.

And she thought, if that squirrel can take care of himself with the harsh winter coming along, then so can I. Once I ripped my problems into small pieces I was able to carry them, just like those acorns, one at a time.

This is Sparta!

Saturday, September 1st, 2007

Messenger: Choose your next words carefully Leonidas… they may be your last ones as king!
Leonidas: You bring the crowns and heads of conquered kings to my city steps. You insult my queen. You threaten my people with slavery and death! Oh, I’ve chosen my words carefully, Persian. Perhaps you should have done the same!
Messenger: This is blasphemy! This is madness!
Leonidas: Madness? THIS IS SPARTA!

This is Sparta

That picture never cease to caused me endless stomachache inducing laughter everytime i see it. Pure Genius. Watched 300 twice over the weekend (Just bought it on Blu-ray, it frikin rocks!). I must say, I would never get bored watching that. Pure cinematographic brilliance. The gore, the style, the very faithful adaptation by Zack Snyder is what made it brilliant! Tempted to watch it again ^_^

During the week, both my sis’ and my com died at the same time. Talk about coincedence and bad luck. Took me about 4 days to completely restored both computers to working condition. Sometimes I feel my part-time job is a computer technician >.> Don’t believe me? Check out this pic…

Computer technician is me

There was one thing that kept me sane during the ordeal of repairing both those coms… and that thing could only be describe via pictures. Lots of pictures. I’ve painstakingly combine the pictures into a comic! You won’t regret it! Click on the following PDF file for a good feast for the eyes!
