A Year in Review – 2008

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

This post has been delayed for some time. With the chaos that was this week, I hardly had the time to update my blog. Looking back at the things that have happened in the past year, I would say it was a good year.

I came back to Melbourne earlier to search for a new place to stay with my then agreed house-mates. I spent a whole month, risking skin cancer under the harsh Australian sun, dehydrated by the heat, and lamenting on wasted time running around from one inspection to another, only to be met with failure due in part to lack of experience and the dissolution of the house-mate pact.

It wasn’t a very good start for they year. Then came the momentous event for me. An event that marks a transitioning phase in my life – Graduation. I’ve officially graduated in August. It is really a hard feeling to describe. On the one hand you are extremely glad that you’ve graduated after so many years of studies but on the other hand, you already start missing the excellent uni life that you’ve had.

Being in the University of Melbourne is one of the best times of my life. It is here that I’ve found my little group of friends. I remember the self-declared holidays that I’ve always took. The morning breakfast, kendo and getting conned into learning Latin dances. Good times good times.

In October, I’ve got my first full time job. After passing through two rounds of interviews, and getting rejected many times by other potential employers, it was definitely a huge sigh of relief once I was offered the job. I was very depressed at one point due to the endless rejection a few times a day for 3 months and I’m sure glad that is all behind me now.

Looking forward to year 2009, I see many big things happening. I’m in the process of getting my very own car. It is something very new to me and I lack the confidence in negotiating a deal. I’m also looking into getting a home loan this year and targeting to get a place of my own by June. As of this time of writing, I would only have about $500 to live on per month, excluding bills etc after monthly loan repayments should I decide to take on a home loan. Seems like I can’t quit my part time job now.

2009 would also be a big year for my friends. Most have graduated at the end of last year and are now applying for PR to stay and work on in Australia. Another close friend of mind had to return back to the old country because she is bonded by the Government. She loves this place a lot and have no choice but to start a new life back there. Her partner has to adjust to a LDR. My small circle of friend is getting smaller. Should all go well for another friend, we will see him getting married!

The only constant thing in life is change. Year 2009 being a year of change for many of us will be a scary time indeed. But I say bring it on!
